Got lavender? Here’s a stunning drink recipe to make with fresh or dried lavender: Lavender Lemonade. We whipped up a pitcher the other day, and we can confirm: it’s one of the best ways to use this culinary flower in your cooking! This beautiful drink has a lovely light purple color and sweet tart flavor. Don’t worry: it doesn’t taste like a bar of Grandma’s soap! It’s got just the right subtle floral finish to each sip. Here’s how to make this ideal summer beverage: it’s great for parties or just sipping on the patio!
Ingredients for lavender lemonade
Lavender is a unique culinary ingredient. Use too much and it tastes soapy and flowery. But use just enough and it’s got a floral undertone that can make a recipe taste irresistible: as in the case of this lavender lemonade! (Also try it in a fruit crisp: it’s stunning!) Alex and I couldn’t get enough of it. Here’s what you’ll need to make it:
- Lavender blossoms
- Sugar
- Water
- Lemons
All you need to do is make a lavender simple syrup, then mix it with fresh squeezed lemon juice and water. It’s so easy! Most of the time is hands off: it takes about 30 minutes to make a batch.
Use fresh or dried lavender blossoms!
You can use either fresh lavender blossoms or dried to make lavender lemonade. Dried lavender is easiest to find and lasts for up to a year in a cool, dry place like your pantry. But do you have access to fresh lavender blossoms? If you have some in your garden or found it at a farmer’s market, you can use that too! You’ll just need the blossoms, not the green leafy sprigs.
How to make lavender simple syrup
The only part of this lavender lemonade that takes effort is making the special simple syrup! Simple syrup is a sugar syrup made with equal parts water and sugar: and this is how you’ll infuse that lovely lavender flavor. It takes only a few minutes of hands on time, then you’ll let it stand with the blossoms for 20 minutes. Here’s what to know about how to make Lavender Simple Syrup:
- Use equal parts water and sugar. The recipe uses ½ cup for a pitcher than makes about 4 cups. If you need more, double the recipe.
- Bring to a simmer with lavender, then remove heat and sit for 20 minutes. This allows the flavor of the lavender blossoms to infuse into the syrup.
- Strain and refrigerate. Strain out the herb and you’re good to go! You can store the syrup for 1 month refrigerated.
The best way to juice lemons
Making lavender lemonade requires juicing lots of lemons! For this small pitcher of 4 cups, you’ll only need 3 to 4 lemons. But make a full pitcher and it can do a number on your fingers if you don’t have a great juicer. Here are the best juicers we recommend:
- Top choice: a press citrus juicer. This type of juicer is ultra efficient and can get out every last drop of lemon juice. Here’s the press juicer we use.
- Next best choice: a handheld citrus juicer. The next best juicer is the type with a ridged top (similar to this).
Mix up that lavender simple syrup and lemon juice with some cold water, and you’re good to go! Lavender lemonade complete. Add it to a tall glass with some of the lavender greens or rosemary, and it looks beautiful. Here we served it with clear ice for an even more stunning look.
Lavender lemonade variations
And that’s it! You can serve your lavender lemonade straight up, or you can turn it into a cocktail by spiking it with booze! Here are some ideas on what pairs well with the floral essence:
- Vodka Lavender Lemonade: Mix 1 cup lavender lemonade with ¼ cup vodka. So easy to drink!
- Gin Lavender Lemonade: Same idea! Mix 1 cup lemonade with ¼ cup gin. Feel free to add some soda water for a bubbly flair.
- Spiked Lavender Lemonade: Mix ½ cup lavender lemonade with 2 tablespoons vodka and 2 tablespoons limoncello.
- Lavender Arnold Palmer Mix it with iced tea for an Arnold Palmer
- Sparkling Lemonade: Add soda water for a sparkle!
- Lavender Limeade Make limeade instead! Follow the recipe below but use 2/3 cup lime juice instead.
